Arrived at the Royal hotel parking at the back of the royal,went straight to reception smiling face's, The staff are fantastic, Got my key for my room, The room was very clean and nice and warm, We had everything we need hot chocolate tea coffee, The bed was fantastic, Went down for breakfast, The breakfast was fantastic, Thanks again to the Royal hotel, See you very soon,

Currently under going renovation inside after new ownership. Places has potential but is tired. Staff are very friendly. My only criticism is the awful stink outside main entrance from smokers. Puts you right off wanting to go in and on leaving doesn't encourage you to return after having a meal.

This hotel is perfectly placed at the top of west cliff,a sea view is a must. The hotel is spotless and warm throughout and the food is delicious. Parking is fine,at this time of year free right outside the door if you manage to get a spot. Very friendly staff and helpful.

Undergoing renovation, not told when booked. Lots of noise Rooms very dated , wallpaper coming off walls , marks on bath, taps grubby, marks on walls , most of staff friendly one very rude Very expensive food compared to other places did not use restaurant there due to this Great views, though Will not return

Lovely Sunday lunch. The waitress even spoke to the chef to ask him to prepare more vegetables for me as I am vegetarian and some of the side vegetables were mixed with bacon. Excellent, attentive service.

Lovely hotel steeped in history. Very comfortable and clean room. On booking we paid for our evening meals in advance. Restaurant has very recently been completely renovated and is stunning. We had a delicious meal and staff were extremely friendly and professional. Really homely atmosphere too. Much nicer than a Premier Inn as it has lots of homey touches!!

I stayed during first week after new year. The built-in heater was non-functional, so I had to rely on a portable heater. Unfortunately, it took several hours to heat the room, and even then, it wasn’t sufficient to keep it warm. The socket was far from the bed, making it difficult for the warm air to reach me, and I ended up shivering through the night—a complete nightmare. Additionally, the bathroom facilities were a disaster. The toilet flush didn’t work despite several attempts, leaving toilet paper unflushed. The bathtub leaked, and I found the floor wet after taking a bath. Despite my efforts to adapt to the provided facilities, I faced constant difficulties. The worst part of this nightmare stay was being woken by a fire alarm at 1 a.m. Everyone was forced to evacuate, only to discover it was a false alarm. Overall, this stay was a nightmare that fell far below even my bare minimum expectations. At this price point, having basic amenities function properly shouldn’t be considered a luxury.

Hotel is going through upgrading, we only found 1lift which only allowed 2 passengers at a time. It would have taken ages to get all guests to their rooms

Evening meal was lovely alas breakfast was a shambles too many people servery corner wasn't big enough to accommodate the amount of people kept running out of things the drinks machine wasn't adequate although another area was available but ran out of water the staff worked really hard let's hope tomorrow will be better

Visited over Christmas for a little break from the madness. On arrival we were greeted by a lovely woman, really friendly and polite. Location is fantastic, right by the beach and attractions near by. Decor is dated, which is expected as the hotel has history, the lift is very small, could only fit two people at a time, but our room was one of the refurbished ones, the modern touches were really lovely with heated towel racks, cosy and comfortable bed. There is a bar area and a room with boardgames, there was entertainment on the evening but we had not been able to see it after a day packed with activities. We had breakfast, which was £13.50 if you pre-book the night before or £15 on the day. Standard breakfast options, though there is a wetherspoons near by. We stayed for Christmas dinner and it was absolutely beautiful!! Good portion sizes, the food itself was delicious, service was great. Everyone got a little card and gift which was such a kind thing to do. We had a really lovely stay and would definitely visit again.

Newly refurbished room was delightful, the decor is modern but with the right touch of history in the colours and the textiles. The bathroom is a joy with heated towel rail and great new bath fixtures. I love the quirky floors and the old wooden features of the hotel. The winter chill and wind can be heard but the room is toasty and quiet. Perfect location in gorgeous Whitby. Absolutely LOVE it 100% recommend.

Fantastic staff, rooms have been recently refurbished and were comfortable and clean. Very dog friendly 🐾 I will definitely stay here again!

Today: I stayed in what looked like a recently refurbished bedroom and what a difference it makes. New bedroom, toilet and furniture. Real improvement. Just needs new windows. Year ago: A very tired hotel in a great location with friendly staff.

We've just returned home from a delicious and generously portioned Sunday lunch. Meat was beautifully cooked, as was a wide range of veg, tall Yorkshire puddings and an incredible orange coloured puree (Carrot? Butternut squash?). The ginger pudding, which I managed to squeeze in, was a light and flavoursome triumph. Staff were friendly, professional and a credit to the hotel. Katie is a delightful asset along with George, Richard and our other server (lovely lass whose name I didn't catch, sorry), who ensured a lovely eating experience. I highly recommend this wonderful value-for-money Sunday experience.

My family had 2 rooms for 2 nights & we were in a part of the hotel where construction was taking place (literally right opposite our rooms). This started at 07:30am & when we complained they couldn’t care less - they said “it’s a separate company & we never know which part of the hotel they are in’” Fantastic location but if you want a good nights sleep beware.

We haved used the Captain Cook cafe in the Royal on a few occasions. It's confortable and serves ok coffee. Now that it's part of the Bespoke chain and subject to potentially much better funding, we look forward to an improved Royal.
